A handful of GEMS and Sorors worked in the Care Assurance System for the Aging and homebound (CASA) garden planting, weeding and watering, prepar-ing the garden for the season. CASA is a non-profit agency that provides services to individuals age 60 and older and to the homebound (wheelchair and bed bound) of all ages. Their programs are designed to en-able the elderly and homebound to maintain their independence, dignity, health and safety by providing services that specifically address their special physical and emotional needs. All CASA programs and ser-vices are provided at no cost to our clients and are based solely on need, without regard to income, race, social status or religion. CASA harvests over 3000 pounds of produce annually for the community.

This year we had twenty-seven graduating seniors. The Rite of Passage ceremony is to honor our seniors as they move forward to womanhood. The Rite of Passage Ceremony is the final annual program for the Delta GEMS. Soror Meaghan Baxter (daughter of Soror Shelia Baxter and granddaughter of Laura Clift), Corresponding Secretary for Gamma Tau Chapter and former GEMS, expressed the importance of scholastic achievement and service, taking care not to make excuses, always remember to take care of business and most importantly make your family proud they are your support system. Soror Rochelle Conley, Huntsville Alumnae Chapter, delivered the charge and gave 10 important things that not only the graduating seniors should remember but the returning GEMS should be mindful of as well. Some of the things to be mindful of was: 1) develop a relationship with God; 2) achieve your dreams; 3) never let any-one tell you what you can’t do; 4) stay physically fit, and 5) acknowledge and thank your parents. The seniors received gifts from the club, a book mark from Soror Ro-chelle Conley the evening ended with a reception.

The GEMS successfully completed 11 community service projects this year, several bonding activities and attended an HBCU. Congratulations to the graduating seniors and thanks to the Committee for a awesome and successful year.

The month of March was filled with wonderful celebrations of our glorious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The culminating event of the month was the Sisterhood Brunch held on Sunday, March 28, 2010. The day started with a spiritual breakfast delivered by Pastor T.C. Johnson at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church and the fellowship continued with a Sisterhood Brunch held at the Holiday Inn Research Park.

The brunch was not only a celebration of sisterhood; it was also an opportunity to honor the strong and sufficient shoulders upon which our chapter was founded. Our vibrant Delta Dears and Past Chapter Presidents were our special guests. Due to their wisdom and leadership, Huntsville Alumnae Chapter has grown into one of the most viable chapters in the Southern Region.

Finally, the brunch was an opportunity to highlight our Chapter “Her-story.” The Heritage and Archives Committee presented the “HER-story” trivia game. Sorors were challenged to put on their history hats and answer questions about the noteworthy accomplishments of Huntsville Alumnae‟s trailblazing sorors and interesting chapter facts. With more than 70 sorors present, the brunch was a delightful celebration of Sisterhood, our Delta DEARS and Past Chapter Presidents and Huntsville Alumnae‟s HER-story. Sorors ate and drank, talked and laughed, relaxed and simply enjoyed being in the presence of SISTERS.
Girls Empowering Myself Successfully (GEMS) performed the play “Unsung Heroes” on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the Butler High School auditorium to an inspired audience. The play, “Unsung He-roes,” was written by Soror Ovetta Hobson specifically for GEMS. The play encouraged and educated the community about our rich “Black Heritage.” We are all quite familiar with the sto-ries of the pioneers, the liberators and the freedom fighters that we know all too well such as, great icons like Rosa Parks, Mary McLeod Bethune, Shirley Chisolm, Thurgood Marshall, Malcolm X and of course Martin King Jr. However, there are countless names that go unmentioned, but nonetheless had a significant impact on our past and our present. This was the inspiration behind this original play. The GEMS did an awesome job portraying defining moments in Black his-tory, including Plessy vs Ferguson, the deadly church bombing in Bir-mingham, Alabama, lynchings in the south, and Brown vs. the Board of Education and the day that then Governor George Wallace stood on the grounds of the campus of the University of Alabama vowing not to let blacks in. The play not only made us remember the harsh struggles of our ancestors but we remembered that we know how to get our groove on when the Chitlin Circuit was started, enjoying performances by entertainers such as Etta James (portrayed by Soror Carla Parker) and Billie Holliday (portrayed by Soror Lisa McAlpin). Special guest for the evening, the Delta Academy, performed an African dance to the song “African Joy” which was choreographed by Soror Raven Griffin. Another special treat of the evening was Delta Sigma Theta‟s part in history which was highlighted during different segments of the play.

Each year the Delta GEMS devotes a considerable amount of time learning from history and more specifically learn-ing from African American History. This year, not only did they learn about the past, they also looked to the future and at the same time educated the community. With just little over a month to prepare, the committee is to be ap-plauded for the time sacrificed (countless evenings and weekends with family) in order to get the GEMS ready for this performance. The GEMS would like to say thanks for all the kind words and cards that sent and look forward to see-ing you next year.
