Huntsville Alumnae Chapter Organizes Census Awareness Event

In support of the U.S. 2010 Census, the Huntsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. organized a “Census Awareness” event at Madison Square Mall on Saturday, February 27^th from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  Mall officials welcomed the community outreach. The day-long event was designed to help educate and inform community members and neighbors on the importance of the census data.

Coordinated by Founders Day chairpersons Pamela Milton and Nancy Vaughn, local chapters designated January 23, 2010 to volunteer in the Huntsville community with CASA.

The Huntsville Alumnae chapter and collegiate chapters: Alabama A&M University’s Delta Delta and University of Huntsville’s Omicron Gamma worked along with CASA volunteers on a blustery Saturday morning to prepare the CASA community garden for vegetable planting.  Young ladies from the Delta Academy and Delta GEMS also helped with this year’s service project.

Education Empowerment Day

Huntsville, Ala. —- In celebration of Disney’s first African-American heroine, Huntsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. sponsored a “Delta Red Carpet” event for the young ladies of Delta Academy. The young ladies had an opportunity to be entertained and to become a special part of history. Delta Academy provides an opportunity for local Delta chapters to enrich and enhance the education of young teens.

We created this website to keep the community abreast of the extraordinary public service programs and activities our chapter offers throughout the year. The Huntsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated provides a variety of programs to empower women, children and families in the Huntsville/Madison County Communities.

Some of our signature public service programs include the Delta Academy, designed to help middle school girls and Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully (GEMS) program for high school teenage girls. Both programs engage participants in timely educational, social, cultural and public service activities that build self-esteem, increase academic performance, enhance interpersonal and social skills, as well as develop an appreciation for community service.

An annual Honors Convocation is held to recognize high achieving high school youth with an A/B GPA. The Ebony Fashion Fair has been our major fund raising event of the year for 23 years. Participants are entertained by the largest traveling professional models in the nation, get a subscription to Ebony or Jet Magazine, and help generate funds to support our public service activities. Finally, we award five tuition scholarships to deserving incoming freshmen at Alabama A&M University, and one tuition scholarship to students attending Drake State Technical College, Calhoun College and UA Alabama.

This year’s Women of Distinction Award founded by the Girls Scouts of North-Central Alabama recognized leaders in our community on Friday, May 8, 2009. The program was held at the Huntsville Country Club and was attended by community leaders and supporters. Several African-American leaders made the list of nominees for leadership in various areas of the community, including Neurologist, Dr. Belinda Savage-Edwards, Aerospace Engineer, Dr. Shelia Nash-Stevenson, News Anchor WHNT, Lisa Washington, School Administrator, Josephine Scruggs, Retired Educator, Lady Shivers Tucker and Butler High School Principal Jacqueline Wyse.

Members of Delta Academy enjoyed a Science in Everyday Experiences (SEE) workshop. Members discovered the scientific properties related to visual perceptions of colors and forensic science. They applied these concepts by creating a color spin wheel and observing a variety of scientific labs.
